How the puzzles are generated
Every puzzle on this site is built in your browser, not pulled from a stored library of pre-made files. When you type a word list into the word search maker, the script places each word into an empty grid one at a time, testing random positions and directions until it finds a placement where overlapping letters match. Words that share letters are deliberately crossed, because a grid where every word sits in isolation is far easier to solve. Remaining cells fill with random letters weighted toward the letters already in your list, which prevents the giveaway of a word standing out against an unrelated alphabet soup.
The maze maker uses a randomized depth-first search that carves a single connected path through a grid, which guarantees exactly one route from start to finish and no isolated pockets. The sudoku maker generates a complete valid solution first, then removes numbers while checking after each removal that the puzzle still has one unique answer. That check is why our hard puzzles are genuinely solvable by logic rather than requiring guesswork, which is a common flaw in generated sudoku.
Print quality and why it matters
A puzzle that looks fine on screen frequently prints badly, usually because it was drawn as an image and scaled. Everything here is drawn as text and vector lines, so grid lines stay crisp and letters stay sharp at any printer resolution. Pages are laid out for standard US Letter and A4 without clipping, and the print view strips navigation, ads, and buttons so you get the puzzle and nothing else.
Large-print versions use a bigger type size and a wider grid spacing rather than simply zooming, which keeps a full puzzle on one page. If you are printing for someone with low vision, the large-print options make a bigger difference than any printer setting will.
Classroom and personal use
Everything generated here is free to print and use in classrooms, libraries, care homes, churches, parties, and at home. Print as many copies as you need. You do not need to ask permission and there is no sign-up, no account, and no watermark.
What you may not do is resell the printables as your own product or republish the generators on another site. If you want ready-made packs for resale or gifting, the paid printable packs are licensed for that.
Who makes this
Puzzle Printly is published by the Winslow Homes team as an independent site. Word lists for the themed puzzles are written and checked by a person, not scraped, which is why the animal puzzles contain animals a child recognizes rather than obscure taxonomy. If you find a typo, a word that does not belong, or a puzzle that prints wrong, email hello@puzzleprintly.com and we will fix it.
Privacy
The generators run entirely in your browser. Word lists you type are never sent to a server, stored, or seen by us. Nothing you create here is saved anywhere except your own printout. Full detail is in the privacy policy.
